Patriarchal Ideology in Indonesian Social Media: A Critical Discourse Analysis

Abstract


Using Critical Discourse Analysis as a lens, this mini research study investigates how patriarchal ideology manifests itself in Indonesian social media (CDA). This study examines interactions on several social media platforms to see how patriarchal norms and values are questioned, upheld, and negotiated in the digital world. Drawing on Teun A. Van Dijk's socio-cognitive method, the study investigates language and semiotic tactics that maintain or challenge patriarchal norms. Data collection included a purposive choice of 12 comments from a TikTok video chosen for their relevance to gender discourse and ideological assumptions. Key findings from theme and socio-cognitive analysis show that social media may both dispute and perpetuate patriarchal beliefs, with dominant discourses frequently preferring traditional gender standards. These findings highlight the impact of internet platforms on gender narratives and power dynamics. This study broadens our understanding of how social media might disrupt cultural norms and emphasizes the need for more inclusive and fair online portrayals.
