An Analysis of Language Style by Teachers and Students Conversation

Abstract


This research aims to find out (1) the types of language styles find in the utterances of 06 teachers and 30 students in the class; and (2) the pattern on utterances in teachers and student conversation in the class. This research uses Martin Joos' Theory (2010) and uses the qualitative method as the research design. The data of this study are the 06 teachers and 30 students in the class. The data were collected using documentation and recording. The data were analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) which consists of three steps: data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings of this study show that: (1) there are four types of language styles find in the teacher and student utterances in the class. The types are formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. The most frequently used styles consultative style that are 65 %, formal style that are 15%, and Intimate style that are 3 %, Language style helps people to relaxation and studying how people uselanguagewhat words and phrases they unconsciously choose and combine canhelpus better understand ourselves and why we behave the way we do.
