Abstract

This research was motivated by the fact that students’ misconceptions in geography learning are often not well-identified through conventional evaluation methods, which negatively impact learning outcomes. The research aims to develop a digital-based Three Tier Diagnostic Test with a contextual approach to identify misconceptions in high school geography material. The research was conducted over four months, from June to October 2020, using the Research and Development (R&D) method with the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), although it was only carried out up to the development stage. The instrument consists of 30 multiple-choice questions with three parameters: answers, reasoning, and confidence. Validation was conducted by experts based on material, construction, and language aspects and was tested on a limited scale at SMA Islam Al Azhar 14 Semarang for X IPS 1 and X IPS 2 classes. The results showed that the instrument is effective, with the highest misconception levels reaching 75% in Class X IPS 1 and 76% in Class X IPS 2 for analytical questions (C4), while the lowest misconception level (0%) was found in basic knowledge questions (C1-C3). This instrument helps teachers accurately and practically detect misconceptions, thereby enhancing lesson planning to better meet students' needs.
