Abstract

In this 21st century, education not only focuses on academic purposes but also character development of students. In Indonesia, integration of character values into classrooms has been given much attention recently, particularly with the introduction of the new curriculum that establishes character development as a primary objective. This research explores teacher strategies to integrate character values in junior high school context. It is a qualitative case study involving one EFL teacher from a Leading School (Sekolah Penggerak) at a junior high school level. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the teacher’s strategies in integrating character values, classroom observation and document analysis were conducted, followed by an interview with the teacher. The data were analyzed using triangulation to ensure a thorough exploration of the strategies employed by the EFL teacher. The results show that the teacher has integrated character values in her lesson plans and emphasized student engagement and interactivity through real-life examples. Various teaching strategies, including group discussions, role-play, case studies, group and pair works, and educational games were employed to integrate character values in the classroom. These efforts aim to develop students’ character during the learning process. However, as challenges due to the diverse student backgrounds and limited resources persist, further research should cope with these challenges.
