Abstract

The open space in the Depok Jaya urban village is a park area that holds sustainable value and plays a role as an environmental balancer amidst built-up areas. Open spaces have undergone functional shifts due to development and the lack of private residential spaces has led to the privatization of public spaces, which negatively impacts the use of public spaces as social and cultural areas. Previous research on the privatization of public spaces reveals that it can increase social segregation, security issues, and various social problems. This study aims to explore the meaning of space for residents in relation to the use of open spaces and the physical setting of the park in the Depok Jaya sub-district. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, using observation to understand the meaning of space and its relationship with the physical environment that shapes the park. The data presented includes primary and secondary data. The sustainability of public spaces is the main issue of this research. The study location is in the residential area of RT 06, RW 03, Depok Jaya sub-district. The area covers 544.27 m with flat terrain, and the ground is already paved. The dominant use of the land is as a parking area for four-wheeled vehicles with paved flooring. From the analysis and discussion, the research shows that the park in Depok Jaya sub-district serves as a space for social activities, including communication, interaction, sports, and recreation for residents. The fact that 44.84% of the park space has been privatized has reduced the social space, but it has not diminished the park's value as a social space for residents. There is a need to build a strong community within the open space environment of the Depok Jaya urban village and to maintain and develop the park as an asset to ensure the sustainability of open spaces.
