Sustainability Study on the Gadang House Envelope: Implementation Strategies in Contemporary Architeture

Abstract
Sustainable design is essential in addressing climate change, and traditional architecture, like the Gadang house of the Minangkabau people, integrates cultural heritage with sustainability. This study analyzes the Gadang houses building envelope using Paola Sassis sustainability framework through a qualitative descriptive approach. Literature data is used to evaluate its environmental, social, and cultural contributions. Findings show that the Gadang house embodies sustainability through renewable materials, efficient construction, and climate adaptability. Ijuk roofing and wooden walls, combined with natural ventilation and lighting, ensure thermal comfort and energy efficiency. The use of local materials and traditional craftsmanship reduces the carbon footprint while fostering community participation in cultural preservation. This study proposes an adaptive opening design for high-rise buildings, inspired by the Gadang houses multiple windows and peg-based construction, to optimize natural lighting and ventilation. Unlike previous studies focused on historical and cultural aspects, this research positions the Gadang house within modern sustainable architecture. The findings highlight the importance of integrating local wisdom with contemporary sustainability principles, making the Gadang house a valuable reference for designing environmentally and culturally responsive architecture.
