APPLICATION OF GREEN AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ARCHITECTURE IN THE CULTURAL HERITAGE BUILDING OF THE ISTIQLAL MOSQUE, JAKARTA

Abstract
The Istiqlal Mosque of Jakarta has undergone renovations by applying the concept of green architecture. It proves that preserving cultural heritage buildings can be done sustainably without compromising environmental quality and sustainability. With modern technologies such as smart lighting systems and solar panels, the Istiqlal Mosque has significantly saved energy and water. Using environmentally friendly building materials also helps reduce carbon footprint and improve air quality. The Istiqlal Mosque received international recognition through the EDGE certificate from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). As a cultural heritage building, Istiqlal Mosque plays a vital role in creating a harmonious relationship between tradition and modernity and between the needs of the people and the well-being of the environment. This research examines the innovative steps taken in the renovation. It provides tangible evidence that sustainable development can be realized even in preserving a cultural heritage building rich in historical and cultural values. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method by utilizing green building principles as a guide for data collection and analysis. The success of the Istiqlal Mosque in applying green architecture principles sets an example for future heritage building conservation projects, which place environmental sustainability as one of the top priorities in the cultural heritage preservation agenda. With an innovative and sustainable approach, the Istiqlal Mosque not only preserves historical and cultural values but also promotes environmentally friendly practices that can be adopted by heritage buildings that are not widely considered in the architectural world.
