Abstract

This research departs from an effort to understand the issue of food security in Indonesia today, using a historical science approach this research will try to understand how people in Makassar managed rice trading activities during the colonial period. This research uses a structuration approach in its analysis process, by looking at the ability of the Chinese ethnic group in managing the rice trade in colonial Makassar. The Chinese ethnic group was involved in rice trading activities in Makassar long before the colonial government came to power in Makassar, so that during the colonial government, rice trading activities were still given to the Chinese ethnic group. Several transformations were carried out by ethnic Chinese in rice trading activities, such as modernization of business entities, technological modernization and capital (economic) consolidation during the economic crisis of the 1930s. The results of this research show that the Makassar Chinese ethnic group was able to adapt to colonial government policies and other changes such as the presence of technology and the first economic crisis that hit the colonial economy in 1930. The results of this research also show the ability to manage the rice trade carried out by ethnic Chinese, a a theme that has not been studied much in historical writing in Indonesia.
