Employing Female (Famous Madurese Folktales) to Reveal Illocutionary Acts

Abstract
Folktale is an enticing media to analyze, especially from linguistic element (speech acts). This study focuses on scrutinizing types of illocutionary acts and the techniques of performing illocutionary acts. It employs qualitative design of research. Observation and documentary review are applied to obtain the data. Field-notes are also used during data collection. In analyzing the data, interactive model of data analysis is applied, including data reduction, data display, and data verification/claim. The results of the study show 76 data classified on the types of illocutionary acts have been found based on the theory of Searle (1979), including: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. It is also found in the folktale that the techniques applied to perform illocutionary act include literal direct technique, literal indirect technique, non-literal direct technique, and non-literal indirect technique.
